Local networking – a good way to get to know people and promote your business

Unlike some networking events, which require you to take time out of your business to meet and mingle, perhaps over a late breakfast, Word Gets Around meets in the evening so immediately becomes more relaxing and informal. There is no annual subscription so you can choose when and whether you go to any particular meeting and the cost – around £15 per meeting – includes a sandwich supper. Taking place at The Corner House Hotel, there is also a bar to oil the wheels so to speak. During a typical evening you can expect time to mix socially and more structured round table meeting time in which to introduce yourself and your business.

But networking has a really serious side too. We know from the demand on our mentoring services that more and more people are running their own businesses, often as a sole trader from home, which can be very isolating. Networking allows you to make new contacts, build relationships in the local area and add a few contacts to your little black book (or smart phone…).

If you are outside Taunton and can’t make it in for an evening meeting then why not think about setting up your own local group? Or visit your local library and see if anyone else has had a similar idea? Being a small business owner has to take you out of yourself if you are to make a success of those early years trading. It is touch sometimes if you are normally reserved, but it becomes easier and you will meet lots of like minded souls for support!
