Somerset Leader Programmes – Rural Development Grants

SomersetSomerset County Council is currently promoting the rural development grant project that offers opportunities for businesses or individuals to be part of a programme described by Cllr David Hall, Cabinet Member for Business, Inward Investment and Policy at Somerset County Council as a ‘fantastic opportunity’:

“If you have an exciting business idea that will help boost growth in Western Somerset or the Levels and Moors area please get in touch. The funding could be used for equipment to expand a business, to improve a tourist location, provide equipment to improve animal health and wellbeing or for farm diversification projects. This is a fantastic opportunity to bid for funding that could be really beneficial to your business and the local rural economy.”

The funding is available to the Local Action Groups (LAGs) in Western Somerset and Levels and Moors areas through the LEADER Programme 2015-2020 which is part of the European Fund for Rural Development: Europe investing in Rural Areas. Programme priorities include:

  • Support for increasing farm productivity
  • Support for micro and small enterprises and farm diversification
  • Support for rural tourism
  • Provision of rural services
  • Support for cultural and heritage activity
  • Support for increasing forestry productivity

As you can see, this offers the opportunity for current businesses to diversify and new ones to develop to meet the needs of the county’s rural economy. Further details can be found on the Somerset LEADER website, but you can also contact Laura Jensen on 01823 357105 or Anne-Marie Spalding on 01823 359242 at SCC, who facilitate the Programme.
